Otoplasty
About Otoplasty
Otoplasty is a surgical procedure to reshape or reposition the ears, most commonly performed to correct prominent ears that protrude significantly from the head.
In children, the condition can lead to teasing or self-consciousness, particularly in school-aged children. The procedure is ideally performed from around age five, once the ears have reached near full size, but before social awareness increases.
The procedure involves sculpting or folding the cartilage to bring the ears closer to the head and achieve a more natural shape and symmetry. Incisions are typically made behind the ear, leaving minimal visible scarring. The recovery is generally straightforward, with a protective headband worn postoperatively to support the new position. This surgery can significantly enhance self-esteem and confidence, with results that are immediately visible and usually permanent.
