Trigger Thumb
About Trigger Thumb
Trigger thumb in children is a condition where the thumb becomes locked in a bent position and cannot straighten on its own. It is caused by a thickening of the tendon or its sheath at the base of the thumb, making it difficult for the tendon to glide smoothly. This can appear in infancy or early childhood and may cause discomfort or a noticeable “click” when trying to move the thumb.
In many cases, trigger thumb does not resolve on its own and requires surgical treatment. Paediatric trigger thumb release is a simple, effective procedure that involves releasing the tight portion of the tendon sheath to allow smooth movement. The surgery is performed through a small incision under anaesthesia, with minimal recovery time and excellent results. Most children regain full function quickly and without long-term impact.
